Index of Refraction (IOR)
Also Called: IOR · Refractive Index · Group Index
The OTDR setting that converts the light's travel time into fiber distance. Take it from the cable or fiber manufacturer. A wrong IOR shifts every event distance on the trace.

Innerduct
Also Called: Subduct
Smaller duct placed inside a larger conduit to divide it into separate pathways.
- On the Map: Innerduct and Microduct
- SOP Step: UG-10 Duct Proving and Pull Tape

Insertion Loss
Also Called: End-to-End Loss
The loss a component or a whole link adds, measured end to end with a light source and power meter.
- SOP Step: SPL-11 Testing and Acceptance
- See Also: Light Source and Power Meter, Loss Budget
Inspection Scope
Also Called: Fiber Scope · Inspection Probe
A microscope or probe for checking connector end faces before mating, against the criteria the owner uses (often IEC 61300-3-35). Inspect, clean, inspect again.
- SOP Steps: SPL-01 Job Preparation, SPL-11 Testing and Acceptance

Interference
Also Called: Passive Interference · Active Interference
Electrical or magnetic noise that corrupts locator readings, from overhead power, rebar, traffic loops or fences. Check for it and choose frequencies before drilling, per the locator manufacturer's instructions.
