What It Is

An optical time domain reflectometer sends light pulses down a fiber and measures what reflects back, drawing a trace that shows the loss and location of every splice, connector and bend. Launch and receive cables at each end let the trace show the end connectors.

Why It Matters

OTDR traces are the record that a fiber was built right. Shoot from both ends and average each event, because one direction alone can show false gains or losses. Save native files in the standard format (Telcordia SR-4731). Never look into a fiber or connector; test light can be invisible (ANSI Z136.2).

Inspection scope and cleaning supplies

Inspect For

Settings per owner spec: wavelengths, pulse width, range and averaging
Launch and receive cables used so both end connectors show
Shots taken from both ends and averaged
Native .sor files saved and named per owner spec

Common Mistakes

Testing from one end only, so gainers and losses mislead
Skipping the launch cable, hiding the first connector
Saving only PDFs instead of native .sor files
Looking into a fiber or connector that may carry light
