What It Is

A flat tray stacked inside the closure. Each fusion splice is protected by a heat-shrink sleeve that snaps into a holder on the tray, and the spare fiber is coiled in the tray’s channels.

Why It Matters

The tray protects splices and holds fiber at a safe radius. A tight bend in a tray is a macrobend and adds loss, often showing more at the longer test wavelength. TIA-568.3 sets a maximum of 0.3 dB per splice; the owner’s threshold governs and may be tighter.

Inspect For

Sleeves seated in the holders, in matrix order
Fiber routed in the tray channels without tight bends or crossings
Tray labeled per the splice matrix
Lid on and latched

Common Mistakes

Fiber pinched under the tray lid
Tight bends that only show up as loss at the longer wavelength
Trays out of matrix order
