Glossary: N
Outside plant terms that start with N, in plain language, with links to the OSP map and the operations steps.
Neutral
Also Called: Neutral Conductor
The grounded conductor below the primaries on a power line, often near the bottom of the supply space. Secondaries, service drops, streetlight feeds or equipment can sit below it, so measure separation from communication attachments from the lowest supply facility, not from the neutral by default (NESC Rules 235 and 238; owner spec). Treat it as energized at all times, like every power facility; only qualified electrical workers work on or near it within the minimum approach distance (OSHA 29 CFR 1926 for construction work or 29 CFR 1910.268 for telecom maintenance; employer safety program).
