What It Is

Fiber optic cable placed along the messenger strand and bound to it with lashing wire, applied by a cable lasher that spirals the wire around cable and strand as it travels down the span. In the drawings it is the second line hugging the strand.

Why It Matters

Cable pulled beyond its tension rating or bent too tightly can be damaged in ways that only show up in testing. Keep the cable at or above its minimum bend radius: 20 × OD under pulling tension and 10 × OD at rest, unless the manufacturer’s value is larger. Tight lashing keeps the cable on the strand in wind and ice. Overlashing onto existing cable needs the owner’s authorization or notice, per the agreement and FCC or state rules.
