What It Is

The excavation where the pilot bore surfaces at the far end. The drill head is taken off here and the pullback string (backreamer, swivel, breakaway link and pulling head) is connected so the product can be pulled back to the rig.

Why It Matters

The exit pit sets where the product starts its pull. It needs room to line the string up with the bore so the product enters straight, and fluid control because the backreamer pushes fluid out at this end too. It is an excavation (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P).

Spoils kept back from the edge (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.651(j)(2)); protective system where OSHA Subpart P requires it

Common Mistakes

An exit pit too small to assemble the string, forcing sharp bends in the product
Fluid overflow at the exit end
Leaving the pit open and unguarded (guarding per the permit, the traffic control plan and your employer’s safety program)
